How Do I Avoid Postpartum Depression?

After childbirth, most women feel sad, fatigued and way too exhausted. These feelings are usually transient psychological disturbances, which means they go away in a few weeks after childbirth. However, if these feelings stay for more than 2 weeks or hinder the woman from caring for her child well – they should see a doctor right away. This is because it is a diagnosis for postpartum depression. 

Postpartum depression and its treatment

It is hard to predict the reaction a woman’s body will get after birth. Therefore, making it hard to find ways in which they can prevent postpartum depression. However, there is a lot of advice that can be given to women to reduce the chance of mental disorders, also including postpartum depression. 

Strengthening the relationship between the mother and her child 

Creating a strong bond between the mother and her newborn will not only benefit the child, but also the mother. This is because it increases the emission of endorphins, which improves happiness and the mother’s self-confidence. The things that help strengthen the bond between the mother and child are:

  • Ensure that the newborn is embraced continuously.
  • Caressing the newborn when bathing him or changing his diaper. 
  • Responding to the baby’s crying and not ignoring it, even if the mother is not able to know the reason for the crying or distinguish what the child wants, but the response makes him feel safe and loved. 
  • Swaddling the baby – This makes the newborn feel as if it is still in its mother’s womb. Giving the child tangible things to see and hear the sounds they make, as these things activate his neurons and stimulate brain development. 

Relying on close people for support and assistance 

To reduce the chance of postpartum depression, the mother should rely on friends and close relatives.  Their help will relieves her burden by:

  • Allowing others to provide assistance and inform them when needed. In that case, if a close relative wishes to care for the newborn for some time, there is nothing wrong with allowing that.
  • Benefiting from other mothers experiences. This makes things easier for the mother, such as knowing what helps to regulate the child’s sleep, reduce his crying and relieve colic.
  • Share the feelings of depression and exhaustion that the mother feels after childbirth with her family. In addition to the physical help provided by close people, psychological support can be obtained by explaining how they feel. 

Get a good night’s sleep 

After childbirth the mother getting enough sleep is one of the important things that is hard to achieve. The best advice given is for the mother to sleep at the same time the baby sleeps. If they are not able to sleep enough, this increases the chance of postpartum depression. Most mothers with postpartum depression get worse with an increase in sleep deprivation. 

Exposure to sunlight 

Exposure to fresh air and sunlight is one of the factors that reduce psychological pressure and help improve mood. Therefore the mother must be constantly exposed to the sun every day for a period of at least 10-15 minutes. 

Satisfy the mother’s desires 

The mother should be able to have her own time after childbirth. This is very important in order to reduce postpartum depression. It is advisable to use another person to take care of the child at this time, maybe a babysitter or husband. The mother can at this time practice her hobbies, go out for enjoyment or she can spend some private time with her husband or friends.

Adopting a healthy lifestyle 

It is advisable to adopt a healthy lifestyle to reduce the chance of developing postpartum depression, in the following ways:

  • Eat healthy food.
  • Don’t drink alcohol. 
  • Healthy meals throughout the day because low blood sugar causes a bad mood and stimulates feelings of depression.
  • Exercising 

Consult a specialist

A specialist must be consulted during or before planning a pregnancy in the event that the mother has psychological problems. If the mother suffers from psychological problems during pregnancy, the doctor may resort to monitoring the mother’s psychological state for several weeks after birth to assess the condition and give the appropriate treatment.
