How To Use Flax Seeds
Most nutritionists recommend using ground flaxseeds instead of whole grains for easy digestion. This is because whole seeds may pass through your intestines without being digested, which reduces the degree of utilization. Grinding/crushing flaxseeds breaks down the tough outer shell. This exposes alpha-linoleic acid and secoisolariciresinol diglucoside/SDG to oxidation. However, the milling process is important. It benefits from these compounds. This is because alpha-linolenic acid is more bioavailable if it is present in the form of oil, or ground. It’s also possible to add ground flaxseed to baked goods to reduce the breakdown of these compounds.
It is important to note that when eating these seeds, you should drink a lot of water to avoid any side effects. Flax seeds can be used in several ways, including the following:
Added to baked goods
Flax seeds can be added to bread, cakes, tea biscuits, pasta, and baked cinnamon rolls.
Used as a substitute for fat in some recipes
Flax seeds can be used instead of fat in making baked goods. For example half a cup of margarine can be replaced with a cup and a half of ground flaxseeds. However, it should be noted that flaxseeds can lead to a faster roasting of baked goods.
The use of flax oil
Flaxseed oil can be used in sauces and salads. However, it cannot be used like other oils such as avocado oil and olive oil. This is because it has a lower burning point than the rest of the oils, which is approximately 107.2 degrees Celsius, while the burning degree of avocado oil is approximately 271. Degrees Celsius, and olive oil 160 degrees Celsius.
Flaxseed oil differs from other products of these seeds because it doesnt contain fiber. It is however an excellent source of alpha-linolenic acid, which is one of the types of omega-3 fatty acids.
Used as a substitute for eggs
Some people may need to avoid eating eggs because of allergies or other reasons. Well guess what? Ground flaxseeds are a good alternative to eggs. So basically eggs can be replaced with flaxseeds in recipes that require eggs as a substance that helps with cohesion. You can mix a tablespoon of flax seed, with three tablespoons of water then leave for two minutes to become a mixture similar to the strength of the gel. This mixture can be added into recipes instead of eggs.
Other uses
There are many other ways to add flaxseed to the diet, including the following:
- Add a tablespoon of ground flaxseeds to your breakfast cereal.
- Add a tablespoon of ground flaxseed to mayonnaise, or mustard sauce when preparing sandwiches.
- Mix a tablespoon of ground flaxseeds with yogurt.
- Add flaxseeds to salads, or to juice.
