 Aloe vera is a succulent plant of the genus Aloe. This name comes from two words; “aloeh,” which is an Arabic word that means bitter, and “vera” is Latin for “truth.” This is an evergreen perennial, it originates from the Arabian Peninsula, but it grows wild in tropical, arid, and semi-tropical climates worldwide.

Aloe vera has been used for health, skincare, and medical purposes because of its active compounds, including vitamins, minerals, sugars, enzymes, amino acids, and salicylic acids. All these components have proven to be beneficial for skin care.

There are different benefits of Aloe vera; we will be focusing on the benefits of aloe vera on the skin. 

It is a good restorative scalp mask

As much as there’s no sufficient research to back this up, its moisturizing, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties on the skin help restore skin health and scalp skin in the end. It is safe to say that you can use an aloe vera mask on the scalp to relieve irritation, replenish hydration, exfoliate, and strengthen hair follicles. You can also use it on hair to make it shiny and healthy.

To treat sunburn with aloe vera, you will have to spread a layer of pure extracted gel from a fresh Aloe vera leaf on the burnt skin a few times a day.

Dark spots or hyperpigmentation is complex for many, especially women—hyperpigmentation results from different things like; acne, eczema, sunburn, and the normal aging process. 

Different products on the market help with hyperpigmentation, but if you want to treat your dark spots naturally, you can use aloe vera.

Study shows that when you apply aloe vera on your dark spots for at least 15 days, it can help lighten post-acne hyperpigmentation. Though studies show that aloe vera won’t remove your darks’ spots completely, it will only help fade or reduce their appearance. 

How to use;

If you are lucky to have aloe vera plant in your compound, it is perfect, but if you don’t, then you can get it at your nearest pharmacy or market.

Apply the aloe vera juice from the leaf directly on the hyperpigmented area on the skin, let it sit for 30 minutes in the morning and evening, and then wash your face with lukewarm water.

For effectiveness, do this daily for 28 days maximum.

It moisturizes skin

The Aloe vera plant leaf is rich in water, so aloe vera is beneficial to the skin because it aids the skin in staying hydrated by locking in the moisture. Aloe vera also contains sugars that help retain moisture in the skin. 

When applied regularly, aloe vera has proved to increase the water content of the outermost layer of skin, and this is an ideal benefit to the skin, especially for dry skin types.

It can be an anti-aging agent.

Besides aloe vera’s ability to replenish and retain moisture in the skin, aloe vera also helps produce hyaluronic acid and collagen, and elastin fibers in the skin, all of which are essential in keeping the skin hydrated and supple, and all these diminish with age.

Aloe vera may, though not well researched, may have antimicrobial properties and help with acne-prone skin. It is also a natural source of salicylic acids, which can help with breakouts like blackheads and whiteheads.

By applying aloe vera generously to your face in the place of a cleanser, you’ll be improving the blood flow in your skin and killing off all the harmful bacteria. 

Leaving aloe vera overnight can also spot treat your acne breakout areas and wash it off in the morning to reduce irritation and redness. However, people shouldn’t replace it with medication but can use it alongside.

It prevents and helps treat dandruff.

Dandruff is a condition that attacks the scalp. Its symptoms may include mild itchiness and flaking. It can result in a severe condition that causes inflammation of the skin, known as seborrhoeic dermatitis.

It was examined on a few people, and the results showed that the symptoms were reducing, namely itching and scaling. After more study, it was proven that it completely prevents dandruff from developing.

How to use aloe vera for the scalp;

Cut the green aloe vera leaf from the top to make two slices, let the gel drip out in a jar, and until it drains.

Use a knife or spoon to scoop out the gel from the leaf
