How to Remove Gum from Clothes

You may get gum stuck on your clothes because you sat on it on a public seat or a bus seat. You are probably thinking how can I ever get this off? Don’t get upset though because below are some methods that can be used to get it off for good!

Freezing

Freezing? Yes! You can remove gum from your clothes by freezing them. Take the cloth that has been affected by the gum and put it in a paper bag then in the freezer. Make sure the bag is closed properly, leave it in the freezer for about 2 hours. Go ahead and remove it after that and peel the gum off right away when it’s still frozen. If you are not able to remove it with your nails, use a sharp knife but be very careful in the process. When you are done, wash your hands well and re-wash the cloth again.

Hot water

Take the cloth and put it in a bowl of hot water. Start scraping the gum off while it is still soaked in hot water. You can do this by using a toothbrush or a knife. Leave the cloth to dry out and keep repeating if the gum doesn’t come off completely. The steam soften the gum and this is how you are able to remove it easily.

Use heat

An iron can be used to remove gum off your clothes. You can start by placing a cardboard on the surface then placing the stained part down directly on the cardboard. The next step is to use the iron on the other side of the cloth and press on it without moving. The heat can be used to melt the gum easily and transfer it onto the cardboard.

Lemon juice

Lemon is one of the best home remedies to remove gum from clothes and does not cause damage to the clothes. You can do this by soaking the cloth in lemon juice for a while and then remove the gum with a sharp tool. After removing the gum, wash the clothes properly.

Use Vinegar

You can use vinegar by heating it in the microwave then using a brush to rub the stained area. This works because the acid in the vinegar can soften the gum and get it off the fabric. After pouring the vinegar on the cloth you can sprinkle some baking soda on it and wait.

Use Vaseline

If the gum on the cloth is old and dry then Vaseline is the best option. You can use a cotton swab and apply it on the cloth. Then with your fingers remove it gently.

Dishwashing soap

Mix equal parts of dishwashing soap and vinegar. Use the solution to scrub the stain gently for approximately 15 minutes. The process can be repeated more than once until it’s gone. When the gum comes off, wash the cloth normally and dry them.

Benzene gasoline

This is considered very dangerous and flammable but it can be used to clean gum by placing a small amount on it. Let it dissolve then clean it with a toothbrush or a knife. When it’s all off, soak the cloth and wash it.

Hair fixing spray

This is very effective in removing gum. When you spray it on the gum, it makes the gum stiffer therefore removing it easily. Use a brush or a knife to remove the gum gently until it’s completely off then wash the cloth.

Use alcohol

When gum is stuck to clothes, it can easily be removed by rubbing medicinal alcohol on the cloth. The process can be done by putting alcohol on a small rag and scrubbing the cloth gently. You should then wait a few minutes and repeat it.

Liquid laundry soap

The gum can be cleaned and removed from clothes with liquid laundry soap, by following the following steps:

  • Cover the gum stain with liquid laundry soap.
  • Rub the gum stain with a toothbrush; to help break it down.
  • Gently scrape the gum with the help of a sharp knife.
  • Scrape off the remaining gum on the clothes with your nails.
  • Machine wash clothes as usual.

Adhesive tape

Adhesive tape is used to get rid of gum stuck on clothes, according to the following steps: Cut a piece of tape, and stick it to the gum by pressing it, making sure to completely cover the area of ​​the stain. Remove the tape from the stain. Repeat the process if the stain is not cleaned permanently.

Peanut butter

Peanut butter contains oils which help dissolve the gum easily. Put an amount of peanut butter on the affected area and dab the gum. Leave this on for a few minutes. Next step is to wipe it with a soft cloth.
